Why Is Dental Treatment Expensive?

In the United States it has become the societal norm to strive for better teeth. Not only are better teeth important for a healthy digestive system but also are important to your general comfort while avoiding unwanted infections and complications of the mouth later in life. If you’ve ever had an abscessed tooth or major cavity, then you understand the pain involved! You can’t chew, drink cold or hot liquids, and you are constantly burdened with a nagging ache in your jaw.

In addition, how your teeth look make a difference in how people look at you and, more importantly, how confident you feel about yourself. All of this adds up to a general feeling of well-being if you take care of your teeth and have the proper dental work done.

You may be shocked to find that many dentists and dental assistants recommend standard brushing and flossing as the best methods for dental hygiene. However, these methods are ineffectual when it comes to the cosmetic look of your teeth, and so something more invasive might be necessary. You want to have healthy teeth, and for them to look good, but you might be forced to work with a budget when it comes to the more invasive procedures.

So what are the factors that cause bad teeth and what procedures are available?

What Causes Bad Teeth?

While every person is different, there are certain factors that cause bad teeth and, in essence, create a catastrophic dental bill for you.

Poor eating habits top off the list of one of the causes of bad teeth. Sugar, coffee, tea and soft drinks can stain the enamel of your teeth, and even chewing ice can cause cracks and other damage to the surface of your chompers.

Along with poor eating habits are poor dental hygiene habits. If you don’t brush at least twice per day as well as regular flossing, you are asking for trouble down the road and a greater expense down the road. Also, if you haven’t been for regular dental checkups, then be prepared for several dental visits to correct any problems.

A factor out of your control is, of course, basic genetics. It is quite possible that you simply inherited a “crowded mouth” of teeth or teeth poor spacing. In this case it isn’t your fault, but likely you are looking forward to a lifetime of corrective dental work to make adjustments for a healthier mouth.

Physical damage is also a reason for bad teeth. Get into a fight lately and end up with a chipped tooth? How about a simple accident where you’ve fallen or had other damage done? Physical damage can certainly add to your pain, and dental bills, when it comes time to have your teeth repaired.

What Procedures Are Available?

For those who have irregular placement of their teeth or crookedness that may seem unattractive, there are several dental treatments that can be done to correct these problems, all of which can be very expensive. Straightening with braces, filling gaps with implants, and porcelain veneers and dental bonding for stains and imperfections are all quite popular.

Procedures to correct crookedness and gaps can take months or even years and can be quite invasive.

Other methods of teeth whitening whitening otherwise straight teeth are for a dentist to employ laser whitening or bleaching in an effort to remove stains. Several companies offer teeth whitening products over the counter where you apply coatings of gel or chemicals to your teeth twice per day for several minutes a time.

Either way, teeth whitening products and procedures, like alignment procedures, are completed over weeks and months and achieve a satisfactory level of whitening with various degrees of discomfort, depending on how invasive the procedure.

Why is Dental Work So Expensive?

We lend a lot of weight to making sure our teeth look good. The other simple fact is that some of these procedures, at least for alignment, aren’t simply for cosmetic purposes but actually work to keep your teeth from damaging one another, falling out or simply rotting out of your head!

Aside from the longer amount of time to do the work, there is the cost of materials such as molds, x-rays, and crowns (that can be made of precious metals). You may even need minor surgery to remove pesky wisdom teeth that can range in the thousands of dollars.

Your teeth are your ambassadors in many ways and say a lot about you that you can’t even say yourself! It is expensive to keep them in top form, but well worth the effort!
